South & West beaches
Skopelos island, North Sporades, Greece

STAFILOS Geographical position
Latitude: N 39,05
Longitude: E 23,44

The closest beach to the town (4,5 km), popular and  prone to get crowded. A sloping road, 500 meters off the bus route brings you to the beach. Mixed sandy and shingle, with umbrellas and sun beds, in a delightful setting. There are two taverns nearby and parking facilities.

It was named after the mythical Prince Stafilos. His grave was found on the small cape at the right side, together with his golden sword, which is displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Athens. The grave is similar to the royal Mycenaean ones. It is believed that Prince Stafilos with a group of Cretans settled here and founded a town, in 1600 B.C.

VELANIO

Geographical position:    Latitude: N 39,08   -   Longitude: E 23,45

Next to Stafilos, on the other side of the headland, much larger and wider, with umbrellas and sun beds. Impressive with fine thick sand and water spring at the very end. Some years ago it was the most popular (unofficial) nudist beach of the island.

AMARANDOS

At the same turn for Dragondoshisma, just after Stafilos, there is a new forest dirt road and all along there are tiny coves and a rocky coast, ideal for fishing and snorkelling. Pine trees extend down to the shore offering cool shades. Less known those rocky coves are isolated and quiet. We have never noticed wasps there. Meryl's Streep first movie musical "Mamma Mia!" was filmed here in September 2007.

ADRINES

Geographical position:    Latitude: N 39,07   -   Longitude: E 23,44

They are the little coves which are sprawling in idyllic settings on a long line after Panormos, 12,5 to 13 km from Skopelos town. Most of them are isolated and quiet. Shingle, with shades of pine trees, are easily reached on foot from the main road.

The Myth: They were named after Adrina, who was a female pirate. The legend says that she came to Skopelos with her ship and her men to plunder the island. The men disembarked and Adrina anchored her ship off those coves to wait for them. The pirates were ambushed by the Skopeletes and when Adrina heard the news she committed suicide.
