Wedding gown
... information direct from Skopelos island, N. Sporades, Greece

This dress, which needed seventeen (17) yards of material, was in the renaissance style. The black colour, the vertical creases and the suffocating tight bodice are all reminiscent of the Spanish Renaissance. The succession of four (4) petticoats worn underneath made the costume impressively full and heavy, but it lacked femininity and charm and made its wearer look like a rigid doll. This effect was accentuated by the tight, padded overcoat, the ornate headdress and the gold-embroidered slippers, which being low-sided did not permit freedom of movement.
