Musical phenomenon 'Mamma Mia!',
seen by more than 30 million,
is heading to the big screen courtesy of Tom Hanks (Playtone). For those not in the know, the show tells the tale of a
young woman embarking on a quest to discover the identity of her father, played out to a soundtrack of hit songs from the
Swedish super group Abba. On the eve of her wedding to Sky (Dominic
Cooper), she brings three men, Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) and Harry (Colin
Firth), from her mother Donna's (Meryl Streep) past back to the Greek
island they visited over two decades ago.

Pierce Brosnan will play Sam, one of the possible
fathers. The former Bond actor said he leapt at the chance to act opposite
Oscar winner Meryl Streep, film industry tabloid Daily Variety reported.
"I said 'yes' right away because it meant working with Meryl Streep,"
Brosnan said. "Secondly, I saw the show with my family in London, and
found it just so wonderfully happy and joyful, and so pitched in time
forever in the 1970s. "What a kick in the pants, to be able to go off and
spend time with Meryl on some Greek island, singing Abba songs." |

PLAYTONE - A partnership between screen legend Tom
Hanks and producer Gary Goetzman, Playtone is known as much for its great
taste in material as its star-power. The Universal Pictures-based company
boasts big screen hits like My Big Fat Greek Wedding and
Castaway, as well as their innovative television programming,
spearheaded by the HBO 10 hour series Band of Brothers. |

Phyllida Lloyd,
who directed both the London and Broadway mountings of the international
hit musical, will make her feature-film directing debut on "Mamma Mia!,"
which has begun shooting this summer in both Greece (Skopelos Island) and
London. The screenplay has been penned by Catherine Johnson, who wrote the
book for the musical. |
