The back door of the house

The tiny church of Evangelistria

EXTERIORS : Just outside the back door of the house is the tiny church of Evangelistria, one of literally hundreds of  ancient churches found in Skopelos town. The church of Evangelistria is rarely used today except on its Saint Day, though its yard and public spaces are kept tidy and neat by a neighbouring caretaker. The public square of the church (approx 30 metres from the back door) enjoys some of the most amazing views found in the town of Skopelos. From the square, which is situated on the edge of the cliffs that the "old town" and fortress sit upon, the views are uninterrupted. The view is of clear blue sea and sky, the neighbouring island of Alonnissos just across the way, and the sights of sea birds, dolphins and sail boats dancing and playing in the water. On a clear day you can see all the way to northern Greece’s Mt. Athos - approx 60 nautical miles.

In a corner of this square is a small cafe (open from mid-May to mid-Sept) where one can sit and appreciate the views in a relaxing atmosphere. Here you may enjoy breakfast or just morning coffee, sandwiches at lunch and even light meals in the evening. Best of all is that any time of season and just steps from your door, you can escape the crowds, listen to quiet music and watch the fascinating parade of ferry boats, fishing and sail boats as they ply the waters to and from the busy harbour.
